Next to the fire station at Vanguardia one can find a long line of props in memory of those who died in propliner crashes.
Douglas DC-6 HK-1776 Lineas Aereas del Norte de Colombia Douglas DC-6 HK-1776 departed Villavicencio for Mitu at 12:06. The airplane carried eleven 55-gallon oil drums and twelve passengers. The DC-6 took off from runway 22 and the undercarriage was retracted. At that moment noises were heard from the nr.2 engine. The engine lost power. The captain decided to return to the airport. He initiated a left hand turn in order to land back on runway 22. On finals the flight engineer feathered the nr.2 propeller. The airplane touched down far down the runway. It overran the runway and collided with a stone wall. Curtiss C-46 HK-3238 Coral Colombia Curtiss C-46 HK-3238 no. 2 engine oversped and the pilot couldn't make it back to the airport. A belly landing was made and the C-46 ran through a ditch, broke up and caught fire. After a flight from Mitu, the Cooperativa Interregioanal de Colombia C-46 arrived near Villavicencio at about 16:30 LT. The crew were cleared for a circling approach to runway 04. Weather was poor at the time of the approach. There was heavy rain with a visibility of 1000m. After passing the Missed Approach Point the crew did not see the runway and began to manoeuvre in the area in order to obtain visual contact with the runway. The airplane wandered over mountainous terrain until it struck the side of a hill and crashed. Curtiss C-46 HK-851P The C-46 HK-851P was owned and operated by a private individual. It was prepared for a non-scheduled cargo/passenger flight from Villavicencio (VVC) to Mitú (MVP). The flight plan indicated that the flight was to follow Airway W-17 at 9000 feet to Mitú. The C-46 took off at 08:23. Shortly after takeoff the right-hand (nr.2) engine caught fire. The pilot attempted to return to the airport by executing a right hand turn. The crew consequently lost control and the airplane crashed. Douglas DC-3 HK-3361 La Aeronáutica Civil no ha establecido aún las causas del accidente del avión DC-3 de matrícula HK 3361, perteneciente a la empresa El Dorado, que se accidentó el pasado 21 de julio en el aeropuerto Vanguardia de Villavicencio, y dejó como saldo cinco personas muertas. El Inspector Técnico e investigador de la Aerocivil, Luis Enrique Neira, afirmó que el motor derecho se incendió al caer a tierra, quedando completamente destruido, y puntualizó que solamente cuando se concluya la investigación se puede determinar si el accidente correspondió a fallas mecánicas o a fallas humanas. I suppose this should be HK-3468 which crashed in flames when attempting to return to Villavicencio airport on September 19, 1992. The Curtiss was on a flight from Villavicencio to Mitu. After the start everything when wrong and Captian Vasquez attempted to return to Villavicencio but his Curtiss did not made it.
